The Glasshouse Sustainability Center in Blantyre was abuzz on November 3 as the highly anticipated Blantyre Farmers Market brought together local vendors, farmers, and marketers under the theme "Promoting Made in Malawi Products."
The event showcased the best of Malawi's homegrown businesses and locally made products, highlighting the country's entrepreneurial spirit.
Alinane Katsobola, one of the marketers, emphasized the significance of the farmers market. "Farmers market is a place where people sell products made from local goods, helping promote Malawian goods and ensuring financial stability for vendors."
Katsobola noted that customer response has been impressive since the market's inception three months ago. "People attending are mostly from outside the country and financially stable, motivating us marketers and organizers."
However, he suggested improvement. "There should be a match between products sold and the theme. Some vendors don't sell products corresponding to the theme."
Customer Chimwemwe Phazi praised the promotion of local products. "The farmers market brings together various products, introducing customers to new Made-in-Malawi goods."
Phazi acknowledged the market's growing popularity despite initial unfamiliarity among Malawians. "Support has been great, and it's a huge tool for encouraging Malawians to buy local."
She described the event as a memorable experience. "The beautiful setting and people make it enjoyable for customers and visitors alike."
The Blantyre Farmers Market occurs every first weekend of the month. The next event is scheduled to take place in Lilongwe.
