A 28-year-old man, Roppen Ziba, has been sentenced to 9 years imprisonment with hard labour for grievously harming his friend, Boniface Chankhumbira, during a New Year’s Eve celebration at Ekwendeni in Mzimba district.
The incident occurred on January 1, 2025, at Snack Garden Bar, where a disagreement between the two led to a physical altercation. Ziba assaulted Chankhumbira with an unknown object, causing deep cut wounds around the neck.
Chankhumbira managed to overpower Ziba and bring him to the attention of their group. The matter was reported to Ekwendeni Police Post, and Chankhumbira was issued a medical report. He was taken to Ekwendeni Mission Hospital and later referred to Mzuzu Central Hospital for further treatment.
In court, Ziba accepted the charge but claimed he committed the offence without reason. He pleaded for leniency, citing his status as a first-time offender and the fact that he was intoxicated on the night of the incident.
However, the state prosecutor argued for a stiff punishment, emphasizing the severity of the offence and the potential for Chankhumbira to have lost his life. Principal Resident Magistrate Clemence Chamwenda concurred with the state, sentencing Ziba to 9 years imprisonment with hard labour.
Ziba hails from Mwakaseghe Village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba district.
