Yona Mwaungulu, a 42-year-old man from Mwaungulu Village in Karonga District, has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for forcing a 7-year-old girl to perform oral sex on him. The incident occurred on May 4, 2024, in Mtsiliza location, Lilongwe.
According to Prosecutor Sub Inspector Florence Mlanje, Mwaungulu committed the offense during the daytime, taking advantage of the victim’s solitude. He had bought roasted sweet potatoes from the girl, who was selling them near her house, and then threatened to beat her up if she cried for help.
The victim was rescued by a passerby who shouted for help, alerting others who chased and apprehended Mwaungulu. Despite pleading not guilty to the charge of Indecent Assault, Mwaungulu was found guilty after a full trial.
During sentencing, Principal Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe concurred with the state’s call for a stiff custodial sentence, citing the seriousness of the offense and Mwaungulu’s lack of remorse. The offense contravenes Section 137 (1) of the Penal Code, which attracts a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment.
