A 25-year-old man, Aubrey Mwenyehere, has been sentenced to 4 years imprisonment with hard labor by the Nkhotakota First Grade Magistrate’s Court for causing grievous harm to another man.
According to prosecutor Sub-Inspector Flora Chasanga, the incident occurred on December 12, 2024, at a drinking joint where Mwenyehere got into a fight with Umandi Nkhoma. The fight escalated, resulting in Mwenyehere cutting off Nkhoma’s earlobe, leaving him permanently disfigured.
Mwenyehere pleaded guilty to the charge and asked for leniency due to family obligations. However, the prosecutor argued that he should have considered his family before committing the offense and pushed for a stiffer punishment to deter others.
First Grade Magistrate Felix Phaiya concurred with the state’s submissions and handed down the 4-year sentence. Mwenyehere, from Chioko Village in Likoma District, will serve his sentence with hard labor.
