Trump Threatens to Cut US Funding to South Africa Over Land Reform

US President Donald Trump has threatened to cut all future funding to South Africa, citing concerns over land reform policies and alleged mistreatment of certain groups.
The move comes after South African President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a bill into law allowing land seizures without compensation under specific conditions.

Trump made his statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, declaring, “I will be cutting off all future funding to South Africa until a full investigation of this situation has been completed!” He later told reporters that South Africa’s leadership was engaging in “terrible” and “horrible” actions.

In response, Ramaphosa defended his government’s stance, emphasizing that South Africa remains committed to the rule of law, justice, and equality. He refuted claims of land confiscation, stating on X, “The South African government has not confiscated any land.”

He further pointed out that only direct funding South Africa receives from the US is through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which supports 17% of the country’s HIV/AIDS program. In 2023, the US allocated approximately $440 million in assistance to South Africa.
