By Hastings Yobe

Police in Mzimba have apprehended two notorious robbers, Madalitso Masina, 34, and Mavuto Mhone, 38, for a string of break-ins at homes and shops in Jenda trading centre. The arrests were made possible through intelligence-driven operations conducted by police detectives on February 4, 2025, following numerous complaints from the community about the break-ins.
The duo’s crime spree began on January 27, 2025, when they broke into Yamikani Kalivute’s shop, making off with a Lifani motorcycle, three bags of beans, and other assorted items valued at 1.6 million Malawian kwacha. Just a week later, on February 3, 2025, they struck again, breaking into John Maseko’s bar and stealing a 32-inch Sinotec plasma screen worth K650,000.

Police detectives recovered some of the stolen items, including the Lifani motorcycle and a bag of soya pieces, during the arrest. Further investigations are underway to recover more stolen goods, as the pair is suspected of breaking into other homes in the area.

Masina and Mhone have been charged with robbery and possession of breaking materials, contrary to sections 300 and 313 of the penal code. They will appear in court soon to answer the charges. Masina hails from Misolo village in Dowa, while Mhone is from Chalambauko village in Mzimba district.
