A 42-year-old woman, Rose Tayitasi, has been arrested in Lilongwe, for allegedly murdering her 16-year-old son, Charles Muwelo, over a missing cellphone. The incident occurred on February 10, 2025, at Mitengo Village.
According to reports, Tayitasi suspected her son of stealing her itel keypad cellphone, which went missing on February 7, 2025. In a fit of rage, she assaulted him with a piece of wood, trying to force him to reveal the phone’s whereabouts. The boy never confessed and eventually collapsed, becoming unconscious.
Tayitasi and her husband rushed their son to Bwaila District Hospital and later to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), where he tragically died on Monday at 06:00 hours. A postmortem examination revealed that the boy died from a head injury sustained during the assault.
The police were only notified of the incident when the father reported it at the Chisiyo-Bypass Police Unit. Tayitasi, from Chimkwita Village in Ntcheu District, will face murder charges. Inspector Hastings Chigalu, Lilongwe Police PRO, confirmed the arrest and upcoming charges.
