Lilongwe police have taken 15 individuals into custody for allegedly inciting violence during unauthorized demonstrations in the city.
The protests, which were disguised as a movement by concerned shop workers fighting for a wage increase, turned chaotic when rioters attempted to ransack shops, similar to an incident in Blantyre a few days prior.
According to Inspector Hastings Chigalu, Lilongwe Police PRO, law enforcement dispersed the initial group of rioters after gathering intelligence suggesting that some individuals aimed to exploit the situation for personal gain. However, the rioters regrouped and continued their destructive activities, including blocking roads and demanding money from motorists.
The suspects were apprehended along the Kamuzu Central Hospital road, near Bwaila District Hospital, and Bwalolanjovu areas. They will face charges of inciting violence in court soon.
To ensure public safety, police have increased foot and vehicle patrols in high-crime areas. Inspector Chigalu emphasized the commitment to maintaining maximum safety and security for residents, visitors, and businesses in Lilongwe.
