The European Union has injected an additional €20.4 million (approximately K38 billion) into the rehabilitation project of Malawi’s M1 road. This funding is part of the EU’s broader commitment to supporting Malawi’s economic development, particularly through infrastructure improvemen.
According to EU Ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach, this latest funding is a supplement to the €140 million already provided in conjunction with the European Investment Bank. Skinnebach emphasized the importance of this project in contributing to Malawi’s economic growth.

Ammiel Champiti, Chief Executive Officer for Roads Authority, welcomed the EU’s support, highlighting the M1 rehabilitation project as a critical component of Malawi’s development. Despite some delays due to administrative and compensation issues, Champiti reported significant progress on the project.

The rehabilitation works are divided into three sections: Kamuzu International Airport to Kasungu, Kasungu to Jenda Township, and Jenda to Mzimba. Construction on these sections is expected to be completed by early 2026.

This project is part of a larger effort to upgrade over 347 km of the M1 road, with a total investment of EUR 191 million, supported by the European Investment Bank and the European Union.
