Minister of Labour Shuts Down Central Poultry Over Labour Law Violations

By Hastings Yobe

Minister of Labour Peter Dimba has ordered the suspension of operations at Central Poultry (Dudu) in Falls, Lilongwe, citing egregious breaches of labour laws.
The decision comes after a surprise visit to the company, where Dimba observed numerous violations, including employees working without protective gear, exposure to harsh temperatures, and inadequate sanitation facilities.

"We have noted a blatant disregard for labour laws, with employees forced to work in hazardous conditions without proper protection," Dimba said. "The company's negligence is unacceptable, and we will not tolerate such exploitation of workers."
Employees at Central Poultry corroborated Dimba's findings, revealing that they receive little salaries despite the demands of their work. Many also reported working late hours without overtime pay or transportation, putting their lives at risk.

In a separate development, Dimba announced the reopening of Plastmax and Hong Sheing Plastics, which had previously been shut down by former Minister of Labour Vitumbiko Mumba due to labour law violations. After verifying that the companies had addressed the issues, Dimba lifted the prohibition order, allowing them to resume operations.
