The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has issued a directive prohibiting the use of the titles “Doctor” and “Professor” by individuals awarded honorary doctorate degrees and honorary professorships in Malawi.
In a statement released recently, NCHE clarified that honorary doctorate degrees are purely ceremonial and do not qualify as academic credentials. The Council stressed that recipients of such awards should not refer to themselves as “Doctor,” nor should the public or media address them as such. However, awardees may list the honor under “achievements and awards” on their résumés.
NCHE further announced that no higher education institution (HEI) in Malawi is permitted to confer honorary professorships, adding that such titles should not be used in the country. The move aims to uphold ethical standards and protect the credibility of Malawi’s higher education sector.
The Council urged stakeholders, including academic institutions, civil society organizations, and the general public, to support efforts in maintaining integrity and legitimacy in higher education. The full statement is available on the NCHE website (www.nche.ac.mw).
