Mzuzu Police Record 6.4% Drop in Crime Rate

Mzuzu Police Station has successfully reduced the crime rate by 6.4% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
According to a report released by Deputy Public Relations Officer Cecilia Mfune, the station recorded 365 criminal cases between January and March 2025, a significant decrease from the 692 cases registered during the first quarter of 2024.

Housebreaking and burglary cases dropped by 39%, with 60 cases reported this year compared to 98 in 2024. Similarly, road accidents declined from 51 cases last year to 26 this year, representing a reduction of 25 cases.

Mfune attributed the positive results to the dedication of police officers and strong community collaboration.
"Our officers are on the ground 24/7, patrolling both the city center and residential areas. We also work closely with the community, who alert us to any suspicious behavior. Additionally, we conduct regular awareness campaigns on crime prevention," she said.

Despite these achievements, concerns remain as cases of defilement rose from 16 to 19, while murder cases increased slightly from four to five, mainly due to incidents of mob justice.

Mfune reassured the public of the station’s ongoing commitment to safety.

"We assure the general public that we will continue working tirelessly to protect life and property. Our ultimate goal is to create a safe and secure Mzuzu," she added.
