Police in Mchinji have arrested a 29-year-old Mozambican national, Mathews Marcos Jesitene, for allegedly possessing counterfeit Mozambican currency amounting to 36,000 meticais, which he was attempting to exchange for Malawian kwacha.
Mchinji Police spokesperson Limbani Mpinganjira told Zodiak Online that officers acted on a tip-off and apprehended Jesitene on Thursday at the taxi rank in Mchinji Boma.
The police have since confiscated the fake currency, and Jesitene is expected to appear in court soon.
He hails from Ndeketeya Village, under Chief Ngweya in Chifunde District, Mozambique.
