Police in Mzuzu have arrested a 25-year-old man, Iman Tayali, for allegedly breaking into the Luwinga Sana Supermarket and stealing K30 million.

Mzuzu Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Cecilia Mfune, confirmed the arrest, which occurred on May 11, 2025, at the same supermarket where Tayali worked as a supervisor and CCTV operator.

“On the evening of the incident, around 19:30 hours, the shop had closed and weekend sales money was kept in the back store and at the counter, awaiting banking on Monday,” said Mfune.

She explained that security guards on duty heard unusual noises inside the shop and alerted their colleagues. The guards quickly surrounded the premises and spotted Tayali on the roof with a sack. Upon seeing them, he dropped the sack and tried to flee, but was apprehended and handed over to the police.

Detectives from Luwinga Police Unit who visited the scene discovered that Tayali had used a knife to cut through iron sheets and the ceiling to gain access to the shop. He also vandalized the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) CCTV system and power DVR, valued at K6 million, in an attempt to destroy evidence.

Police have since recovered the entire K30 million and Tayali will appear in court soon to answer charges of breaking into a building and committing a felony.
