Hon. Jappie Mhango Arrested by ACB Over Abuse of Office Allegations

By Hastings Yobe

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested former Cabinet Minister Hon. Jappie Mhango over allegations of abuse of office during his tenure at the Ministry of Transport and Public Works.
According to a statement released by the ACB, Mhango is accused of misusing his public office between 2016 and 2017 by authorizing the arbitrary sale of government houses at undervalued prices. The properties, which belonged to the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, were reportedly sold at MK2,950,000.00 each, a move that allegedly benefited Cuthbert Mhango and 11 others, resulting in a significant loss of public revenue.

In a separate but related incident, the Bureau alleges that on April 11, 2022, while being interviewed at the ACB offices in Mzuzu, Mhango provided false information. He reportedly denied knowing the landlord of a house in Chimaliro, Mzuzu, rented by his second wife, Miss Thokozile Wanda. Investigations, however, revealed that the property was purchased from the Ministry of Transport and Public Works during Mhango’s time as minister and is owned by his close relative, Cuthbert Mhango.

The ACB stated that Hon. Mhango will be taken to court after a formal statement has been recorded from him.

The Bureau continues to urge the public to resist, reject, and report corruption by calling its toll-free line 113.
