Microsoft founder Bill Gates has announced that he will dedicate the majority of his vast fortune, projected to reach $200 billion by 2045, to improving health and education services in Africa over the next 20 years.
Gates made the announcement at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, emphasizing that investment in health and education could unlock long-term prosperity across all African nations.
Gates encouraged Africa’s young innovators including Malawi to explore the use of artificial intelligence in improving healthcare, citing Rwanda’s successful use of AI-powered ultrasound tools to detect high-risk pregnancies early. He also emphasized the importance of partnerships with governments, research centers, and local governments.
Malawi is to benefit from the funds as they will help reduce maternal and child mortality rates, disease eradication ( including HIV/AIDS, malaria, cancer and Tuberculosis) and poverty reduction.
The announcement comes after the US government cut aid to Africa, including programs to treat patients with HIV/AIDS, under President Donald Trump’s America’s president.
