Blantyre-based singer Teddy Makadi recently released a beautiful album titled With Love, Makadi, but the project is not getting the attention it truly deserves.
Makadi, who rose to fame after the 2014 Sunbird Search for a Star competition, is known for his emotional lyrics and smooth voice.
His songs, like “Desire,” “Unandikonda,” and “Malawi Kwathu,” touch on love, heartbreak, and self-reflection. His new album shows great creativity and talent, and many who have listened to it agree that it is one of the best music projects to come out of Malawi this year.
However, the album didn’t get the usual support we often see when other popular artists drop new music. In most cases, fellow musicians and fans rush to post album covers, music links, or shout-outs on their social media—often just minutes after the release. But for Makadi, this did not happen.
This has led some music lovers to wonder: Why isn’t Teddy Makadi getting the same love? Is it because he doesn’t have close ties with other big artists? Or maybe his calm and quiet personality doesn’t fit in a music industry where connections and popularity matter more than talent?
“There is so much emotion and quality in Teddy’s music, but the industry is quiet. It’s like he is being ignored,” said one fan on Facebook.
Makadi has worked hard over the years, releasing well-written songs like “M’malele” and “Nawe (Happier).”
He has even collaborated with stars like Eli Njuchi. Yet his name is rarely mentioned in mainstream music discussions, and many believe he is being overlooked.
Some believe that Malawians tend to focus more on hype than on quality.
Others blame the industry’s habit of supporting only those within certain friend groups. “Sometimes it’s not about the music,
Even so, fans of Teddy Makadi hope the situation will change. They believe his album With Love, Makadi deserves more attention.
“Malawi should start supporting real talent,” said a fan. “Teddy Makadi is a gem. His music heals the soul.”
