A 26-year-old stepfather Luwashi Bakali has been arrested for allegedly killing his 2-year-old stepdaughter on Christmas Day.
According to police, Bakali assaulted the toddler at Kawale Village in Traditional Authority Mazengera, Lilongwe.
The mother had left the child sleeping in the house while she went for a bath. When she returned, she found the child lying outside, unconscious.
The mother and Bakali rushed the child to Nkhoma Mission Hospital, where she died.
Police say Bakali had been mistreating the child, who was not his biological daughter.
A postmortem examination revealed that the child died from internal bleeding due to physical assault.
Bakali will be charged with murder. He comes from Mtisauka Village, Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe District.
Lilongwe police spokesperson Inspector Hastings Chigalu confirmed the arrest.
