Mccrystal Charlie, a 56-year-old church pastor from Kadziyo Trading Centre in M’bwatalika, has been arrested by police at Mpingu in Lilongwe for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old girl, resulting in her pregnancy.
According to Inspector Hastings Chigalu, Lilongwe Police PRO, Charlie met the victim in May last year when she would frequently visit the church premises to draw water from a borehole. He proposed a love affair to the girl, who eventually became pregnant.
The victim’s grandmother discovered the pregnancy in December and confronted the girl, who revealed that Charlie was responsible. The matter was reported to Mpingu Police Unit, and the girl was taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital for a medical examination, which confirmed a 21-week pregnancy.
Charlie, who is separated from his wife, claimed that he and the girl had agreed to marry after the pregnancy was revealed, but her relatives objected due to her age. He has been taken to court to face charges of Having Sexual Intercourse with a Child. Charlie hails from Chilembwe Village, Traditional Authority Tengani in Nsanje District.
