A 44-year-old man, Hastings Dumba, has been arrested by Lilongwe Police for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old standard six girl.
According to Inspector Hastings Chigalu, Lilongwe Police PRO, Dumba was apprehended on January 4 by community policing members at Njewa area. The suspect, a panel beater by profession, had been living with the minor as his wife for two months in Chinsapo.
Dumba proposed to the girl in November last year at Nsaru Trading Centre, promising to take her to town if she accepted. The girl, born on December 2, 2008, was taken to the One Stop Centre at Kamuzu Central Hospital for a medical examination after Dumba’s arrest.
During interrogation, Dumba admitted to living with the girl but blamed her for initiating the relationship. He claimed that as a single man, he could not resist the girl’s advances.
Dumba, from Thapaniwa Village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District, will appear in court soon to face charges of Having Sexual Intercourse with a Child.
