Malawi Defence Force and Police Service Condemn Political Violence

By Hastings Yobe

The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and the Malawi Police Service (MPS) have jointly condemned the rising incidence of political violence in the country, particularly in the lead-up to the 2025 General Elections.
In a statement issued on January 8, 2025, the two security institutions expressed concern over the increasing tendency of some political parties, civil society organizations, and individuals to use public platforms and social media to spread hate speech and false rumors. This, they warned, has the potential to plunge the country into chaos.

The MDF and MPS emphasized that Malawians have the right to live without fear of political violence and warned those involved in inciting violence that their actions are punishable under Malawian law.

The security institutions also cautioned citizens against being manipulated by politicians and other individuals seeking to perpetrate violence.
