Lilongwe Police have arrested a 40-year-old woman, Dyless Mbengo, for allegedly duping 11 people out of maize valued at K577 million. Mbengo, a resident of Gochi Village in Ntcheu District, posed as the representative of a non-governmental organization (NGO) that purchased maize in bulk to distribute to those in need.
According to Inspector Hastings Chigalu, Lilongwe Police PRO, Mbengo approached grain traders and farmers on multiple occasions, promising to pay them for their maize. However, she either paid them with fake checks or promised to pay later, producing fake documents from her non-existent organization. After obtaining the maize, Mbengo would go into hiding, leaving her victims with significant financial losses.
The police have recorded 11 cases so far, with more victims coming forward. Four individuals were duped out of maize worth K260 million, K86 million, K53 million, and K30 million, respectively, in Lilongwe, Nkhota-kota, and Mzimba.
Mbengo was arrested over the weekend after an intensified investigation and manhunt by Lilongwe Police detectives. She is expected to appear in court this week to face multiple counts of Obtaining Goods by False Pretenses.
