Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 28-year-old man, Nasoni Moyenda, for defiling a 10-year-old girl in a church toilet. Moyenda, who hails from Wande Village in Traditional Authority Masula, Lilongwe District, committed the heinous crime on December 23, 2024, at around 19:30 hours at Chiuzira Trading Centre.
According to Sub Inspector Eugenio Yotamu of Lilongwe Police prosecutions, Moyenda gave the victim K500 in an attempt to silence her after the assault. Moyenda pleaded guilty to the charge of having sexual intercourse with a female child.
However, Moyenda claimed that he was misled by a witchdoctor who promised him wealth if he had sex with a virgin of the victim’s age. The court rejected his mitigation, citing the seriousness of the offense and the fact that Moyenda was supposed to protect the victim, not subject her to physical and psychological trauma.
Senior Resident Magistrate Bracious Kondowe emphasized that the victim was forced into the sexual act without her consent, as she was not capable of giving consent due to her age. Moyenda’s sentence was in line with the State’s prayer for a stiff punishment, considering the offense attracts imprisonment for life.
Moyenda has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment with hard labor.
