The Catholic Youth Council of Malawi has strongly condemned the disrespect shown to the Catholic faith during a recent social weekend at Mzuzu University.
In a statement addressed to the university's Vice-Chancellor, CYCM expressed disappointment over the inappropriate portrayal of Catholic religious life and sacramentals by some students.
The organization criticized the misuse of Catholic symbols, such as the rosary, which they consider essential for religious expression.
CYCM warned that such actions promote intolerance and undermine Malawi's tradition of religious harmony.
"We strongly condemn the portrayal of religious life in a way that misrepresents the character of those who are religious," the statement read.
"Such depictions inaccurately reflect the values and behaviors that adherents uphold."
CYCM urged all Malawians, especially the youth, to uphold religious tolerance and avoid behaviors that may offend others' faith.
They also called on Catholics to exercise discernment and refrain from provocative actions.
The incident at Mzuzu University has started discussions about the importance of mutual respect among different religious groups in Malawi.
The university administration has yet to issue an official response regarding the matter.
