A 33-year-old laundry attendant at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe, has been arrested for allegedly stealing 300 medical syringes and 30 urinal bags.
Feston Mphonde, who was assigned to work as a gas cylinder wheeler on the day of the incident, took advantage of the nurses' absence to sneak into a treating room and steal the medical equipment.
According to Inspector Hastings Chigalu, Lilongwe Police PRO, Mphonde was caught by security guards while exiting the ward, and the stolen items were discovered in his laptop bag.
He was immediately handed over to the Area 33 Police Unit at KCH and is currently being held at Area 3 in Lilongwe.
Mphonde, who hails from Mphonde Village in Lilongwe District, will appear in court soon to answer a case of Theft by Public Servant.
This incident raises concerns about the security of medical supplies at KCH and the potential consequences of insider theft.
In a similar incident, a KCH pharmacy assistant was arrested for stealing medical drugs, which were later recovered from illegal pharmacy dealers in Lilongwe.
These cases highlight the need for strengthened security measures and internal controls to prevent theft and ensure the integrity of medical supplies at healthcare facilities.
