In a bid to reduce motorcycle accidents in Lilongwe, police have impounded 62 motorcycles whose riders were found to be flouting traffic rules.
The operation, which was carried out by the Lilongwe Police, targeted motorcycle riders who were not wearing helmets, carrying more than one passenger, and engaging in other reckless behaviors.
According to police statistics, approximately 30 motorcycle accidents occur in Lilongwe every month, resulting in serious injuries and fatalities.
“We are concerned about the high number of motorcycle accidents in Lilongwe, and we are taking measures to address the problem,” said a Lilongwe Police spokesperson. “We urge all motorcycle riders to follow traffic rules and regulations to protect themselves and their passengers.”
The police operation was aimed at educating motorcycle riders about the importance of road safety and the consequences of reckless behavior.
“Wearing a helmet can save lives in the event of an accident, and carrying only one passenger helps to keep the motorcycle stable and prevent crashes,” said the spokesperson.
The police have warned that they will continue to monitor motorcycles and punish those who break the rules. Riders who fail to comply with traffic regulations risk having their motorcycles seized.
The Lilongwe Police have appealed to all road users to respect traffic laws and regulations, and to report any reckless behavior to the authorities.
