In a bid to enforce road traffic rules and regulations, the Lilongwe Police traffic department impounded 56 passenger service vehicles (PSV) on Thursday morning.
The vehicles were seized for non-compliance with various road traffic regulations, including operating without motor vehicle insurance, certificate of fitness, and worn-out tyres. Additionally, some vehicles were found to be exceeding the passenger sitting capacity.
This latest enforcement exercise follows a similar operation earlier in the week, where 62 motorcycles were impounded for various traffic offences.
According to Inspector Hastings Chigalu, Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer, the enforcement exercises will continue to ensure maximum safety of passengers and other road users in the city.
“The Lilongwe Police will continue to conduct regular checks on all vehicles, including passenger service vehicles and motorcycle taxis, to ensure compliance with road traffic rules and regulations,” said Inspector Chigalu.
The police have urged all drivers and vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and comply with all relevant regulations.
