By Hastings Yobe

Lilongwe Police have arrested two men and a woman for allegedly stealing K6 million from a Zambian national who boarded their vehicle, which was operating as a taxi, on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
The suspects, identified as Davie Kaunda, 34, Habib Foster, 26, and Charity Kathumba, 26, were arrested for their alleged involvement in the theft.
According to police reports, the suspects, operating a Mira motor vehicle with registration number NN 11689, picked up the Zambian national at Mchinji Boma. The victim was traveling to Lilongwe for personal business.

Upon arrival at Area 4 Ziboliboli stage around 13:00 hours, the victim attempted to exit the vehicle but found the doors locked due to a child-lock system engaged by the driver. Sensing danger, the victim grabbed the steering wheel and began to struggle with the driver, forcing the vehicle to stop abruptly in the middle of the road.
Kaunda and Charity allegedly fled the scene with the victim’s bag containing the cash, while Foster remained behind. Good Samaritans responded to the victim’s cries for help and apprehended Kaunda and Foster. However, Charity managed to escape initially.

Later that evening, detectives launched a manhunt and arrested Charity at Kaphiri while she was attempting to flee the city on a hired motorcycle.
Efforts are still underway to recover the stolen money. The suspects will appear in court soon to face charges of theft.

Notably, Charity Kathumba was previously arrested on November 7, 2024, for committing similar offenses. However, her robbery case stalled after she and her accomplices failed to honor court bail conditions.

Davie Kaunda hails from Kabunduli Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kabunduli, Nkhata-Bay. Habib Foster is from Mthiramanja Village, T/A Mthiramanja, while Charity Kathumba comes from Chitambi Village, T/A Chikumbu, Mulanje District.
