Flames international striker Gabadinho Mhango has taken his team, Marumo
Gallants, to court demanding over K82 million over the use of his image.
According to South African website Soccer Betting News, Mhango is accusing
Marumo Gallants of repeatedly using his image and name in their advertisements
without paying him any compensation.
These include a picture posted on the
club’s website on December 5, 2023, celebrating their match against Orlando
Pirates, a video clip of Gaba speaking on September 13, 2024, and the inclusion
of his name in the starting lineup for some matches, which was posted on the
club’s official website on March 14, 2025.
The player initially took his complaint to the Premier Soccer League’s
National Dispute Resolution Committee, which refused to hear the matter in
February due to lack of jurisdiction, which led to Mhango’s appeal to the
court.
The rights were initially held by a company that owned Mhango says Gallants,
when they bought Swallows, took full ownership of the rights, but he says the
club has failed to honour its payments.
In January and September 2024, Mhango reminded the club that he was owed
ZAR828,000, which is about 83 million malawi kwacha but the club has not paid
him the money to date.
