South African hip-hop sensation Nasty C has sparked conversation in Malawi after stating in a recent interview that he does not know any Malawian artist.
The rapper made the remarks during a sit-down with Malawian content creator Jaa Kev, when asked if he was familiar with the country’s music scene.
“I don’t know any Malawian artist… but I’m open to discover,” Nasty C responded.
The comment has since stirred reactions online, with many Malawians describing it as a wake-up call for the country’s music industry, which continues to struggle for visibility beyond its borders.
Despite the wealth of talent within Malawi, the country’s artists remain relatively unknown across Africa. This lack of recognition has been attributed to several factors, including limited marketing strategies, weak regional collaborations, and minimal international exposure.
Malawian musicians often rely on local platforms and social media to promote their work, but experts say this is not enough in an era where branding, consistency, and networking determine success. While neighboring countries such as Zambia and Tanzania have successfully exported their music through cross-border partnerships and high-quality production, Malawi is yet to build that momentum.
The absence of Malawian names on major African playlists, festival lineups, and collaborations continues to undermine the country’s potential.
Observers argue that the industry must prioritize intentional efforts to reach wider audiences through better content packaging, digital distribution, and participation in regional music markets.
Nasty C’s comment, though simple, underscores a deeper issue but Malawi’s music industry is not doing enough to place itself on the African map. For many, the moment is not one of offense, but an opportunity to rethink strategies and push harder for international relevance.
